SALINAS – Lawrence Gowin, age 81, passed away at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Friday morning July 9, 2010. He was born June 17, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Anneliese Muhlehnner Gowin of Ingolstadt, Germany and his mother, Lucille Begin Gowin Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his aunt, Laverna Begin Canatella of San Francisco.

Shortly after World War II, he wed Anneliese while stationed in Germany for service in the U.S. Army. In 1959, the two left Germany to come to the United States along with their three sons: Robert, Larry, and Henry. The family moved to Salinas in 1968 after a brief stay at Ft. Ord.

Lawrence served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1969. He was a Code Intercept Operator for the Office of Strategic Services, the pre-cursor to the modern C.I.A., and also served in Korea and Vietnam. Thereafter, he worked at Ft. Hunter Liggett for a variety of defense contractors for twenty more years. In 2003, he was named one of Monterey County’s Outstanding Veterans by the Board of Supervisors.

Lawrence is survived by: his three sons, Robert (Monica), Larry and Henry; two grandchildren, Brett Musselman and Matt (Lori) Gowin; four great-grandchildren, and cousins: Richard (Zeni) Canatella, Marie Kuhns, and John (Susan) Canatella.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, July 16, 210 at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA 93906. Cremation will be conducted under the direction of Struve and Laporte. The family wishes that, one day, Lawrence’s and Annelise’s remains be placed at the Monterey County Veterans Cemetery on the former Ft. Ord.
