Jim was a longtime businessman and property developer in Salinas, Monterey and the surrounding areas for over 50 years. In 1961 he taught himself the carpet business starting door to door and finally opening his own carpet store. Jim then started developing properties leading to Jim Appling Investments and Appling Motel's Inc. as well as various other investment companies and partnerships. Jim built motels, apartment houses, commercial buildings, and more. He was a respected role model to many, a man of his word and his handshake was his bond. His business success came from hard work, dedication, and an unbridled determination to succeed. He lived by the old motto, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Jim was a member of the Salinas Elks Lodge for 50 years; the Native Son's of the Golden West; California Water Fowl; Ducks Unlimited; Monterey County Historical Society, and the Big Water Duck Club in Los Banos. He had a love of the outdoors. Duck hunting, fishing, and clay shooting were his passions and lifestyle.
His parent's, Vernon and Alta Mae Appling, were born in Chico Texas and Altus Oklahoma, and moved to Salinas during the dust bowl era. A Salinas native, Jim graduated in 1957 from Salinas High School. He grew up attending the First Southern Baptist Church in Alisal and was known for his infectious laugh, and teasing and jokes ways. Always proud of his "Oakie" roots, as well as being raised in Alisal he continued to develop properties helping to improve the Alisal area.
Jim died after a two year battle from Metastic Gastroesophogeal Carcinoma, (cancer), at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, (CHOMP). Always said: "I never turn down a cookie or a prayer".

Jim is survived by Frankie, his wife of 52 years; his three daughters, Julie Grigas, Liz Appling, and Carrie Appling; his beloved granddaughter, Drew Lake; his brother, Don Appling (Carole); his sister, Sharon Griffin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends, and business associates and two foster daughters, Traci (Mike) Denely; Jennifer (Frank) Garcia, and their children, Briana & Michael Denely; Emily, Addison, Brady, and Dylan Garcia, all of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parent's, Vernon and Alta Mae Appling, his son-in-law Richard Grigas; his brother-in-law, Mike Griffin, his cousin, "Babe" James Don Appling; His uncles and aunts, Lloyd and Faye Appling; Harold and Sue Vick; Wade and Laverne Brake; JB and Melvin Appling; Ed and Chris Peele and many friends.
